Dog Licensing Requirements
Licensing your dog has many benefits
for you, as the owner, as well as the dog:
- Animal control officers have a
record of all vaccinated dogs so vaccinations can be verified if a
bite occurs.
- Dogs see a veterinarian for rabies
vaccination a minimum of every three years. Owners receive
education about pet overpopulation and canine disease prevention.
- Owners are more likely to get
their lost dogs back if the dogs are wearing a current license
tag. Licensed dogs are held much longer at animal shelters than
unlicensed dogs which are placed for adoption or destroyed after
72 hours. Unfortunately, many owners of unlicensed dogs return
from a vacation to find their dogs have run away from a caretaker
and were either adopted or destroyed at a local animal shelter. If
a dog is wearing a license tag, animal shelter employees make
every effort to reunite the animal with its owner.
- Licensing revenue pays for
emergency medical care for injured stray animals until the owner
can be found. This revenue source assures owners that their
animals will be transported to a veterinarian if they are found
injured.
- If a currently vaccinated dog is
exposed to a rabies positive animal, it may be quarantined.
Conversely, if an animals vaccination has expired or is not
valid, it is generally destroyed. An incident in Loomis with a
single rabid dog caused Animal Control to destroy seven family
dogs whose vaccinations had expired.
All dogs in the local area are
required to be licensed. Licensing requirements and fees vary
depending on the community you live in. Here is an overview of
licensing requirements in various local jurisdictions.
