Dog Licensing Requirements
Licensing your dog has many benefits
for you, as the owner, as well as the dog:
- Animal Control officers have a
record of all vaccinated dogs so vaccinations can be verified if a
bite occurs.
- Dogs see a veterinarian for rabies
vaccination a minimum of every 3 years. Owners receive valuable
education about pet overpopulation and canine disease prevention.
- Owners are more likely to get
their dogs back if the dogs are wearing a current license tag.
- Licensing revenue pays for
emergency medical care for injured stray animals until the owner
can be found. This revenue source assures owners that their
animals will be transported to a veterinarian if found injured.
- If a currently vaccinated dog is
exposed to a rabies positive animal, it may be quarantined.
Conversely, if an animal’s vaccination has expired or is not
valid, it is generally destroyed.
All dogs in the local area are
required to be licensed. Licensing requirements and fees vary
depending on the community you live in. Here is an overview of
licensing requirements in various local jurisdictions.
Information is believed accurate but is not guaranteed.
Roseville (City Limits)
Dog licenses may be obtained from the License Division of the
Roseville Finance Department. Any dog old enough for a rabies
vaccination, usually four to six months of age, must be licensed.
A current rabies vaccination certificate must be presented to
license a dog for the first time or to renew a dog license. In no
case shall a dog license be valid past the expiration date of the
rabies certificate.
Fees for an unaltered dog are $30 for a 1 year license, $57 for a
2 year license, or $86 for a 3 year license.
Fees for an altered dog are $15 for a 1 year license, $29 for a 2
year license, or $43 for a 3 year license.

Rocklin (City Limits)
All dogs over four months of age
must be licensed. The city has a limit of no more than three
dogs or swine at a single residence. No fees are charged for
seeing eye dogs for a blind or partially blind person. City dog licenses can be purchased
A one-year license is $43.00. If your dog is spayed/neutered, you
will get a 50% discount off the license fee ($21.50/year).
The license fee is prorated to coincide with the expiration of the
rabies certificate or exemption certificate. So, if the rabies
certificate expires in two months, you only pay for two months.
To obtain the correct prorated fee, call the Police Department at
916.625.5405. More information can be found at

Penryn, Newcastle, Unincorporated Areas)

for dogs living in the county, with the exception of dogs living
in Roseville, Rocklin, or Auburn (these cities license dogs
themselves). Fees are $23.00 per year or $11.00 if the dog
is spayed or neutered. Call (530) 889-7315 or visit

Know?
By licensing your dog you are

Animals without current rabies
vaccinations and licenses are routinely destroyed if they
come in contact with a rabid animal?
