Dog Licensing Requirements

Licensing your dog has many benefits for you, as the owner, as well as the dog:

  • Animal control officers have a record of all vaccinated dogs so vaccinations can be verified if a bite occurs.

  • Dogs see a veterinarian for rabies vaccination a minimum of every three years. Owners receive education about pet overpopulation and canine disease prevention.

  • Owners are more likely to get their lost dogs back if the dogs are wearing a current license tag. Licensed dogs are held much longer at animal shelters than unlicensed dogs which are placed for adoption or destroyed after 72 hours. Unfortunately, many owners of unlicensed dogs return from a vacation to find their dogs have run away from a caretaker and were either adopted or destroyed at a local animal shelter. If a dog is wearing a license tag, animal shelter employees make every effort to reunite the animal with its owner.

  • Licensing revenue pays for emergency medical care for injured stray animals until the owner can be found. This revenue source assures owners that their animals will be transported to a veterinarian if they are found injured.

  • If a currently vaccinated dog is exposed to a rabies positive animal, it may be quarantined. Conversely, if an animal’s vaccination has expired or is not valid, it is generally destroyed. An incident in Loomis with a single rabid dog caused Animal Control to destroy seven family dogs whose vaccinations had expired.

All dogs in the local area are required to be licensed.  Licensing requirements and fees vary depending on the community you live in.  Here is an overview of licensing requirements in various local jurisdictions.  Information is believed accurate but is not guaranteed.

Roseville (City Limits)

Roseville licenses resident dogs on the city's fiscal year basis (July though June).  Fees are $15.00 per year, however dogs which are spayed or neutered are entitled to a 50% discount.  The owner must provide a rabies certificate valid through December 31st of each year to renew for that year.  Renewal notices are mailed in June of each year.  Licenses can be obtained by mail or in person.  For more information call the city at (916) 774-5310 or visit City of Roseville licensing

Rocklin (City Limits)

City dog licenses can be purchased for up to three years (or until expiration of the dog's rabies certificate) at the rate of $15.00 per year.  Spayed and neutered dogs are entitled to a 50% discount.  No fees are charged for seeing eye dogs for a blind or partially blind person.  All dogs over four months of age must be licensed.  The city has a limit of no more than three dogs or swine at a single residence.  More information can be found at Rocklin licensing.

Placer County (Granite Bay, Loomis, Penryn, Newcastle, Unincorporated Areas)

Placer County issues dog licenses for dogs living in the county, with the exception of dogs living in Roseville, Rocklin, or Auburn (these cities license dogs themselves).  Fees are $17.00 per year or $8.00 if the dog is spayed or neutered.  Call (530) 889-7315 or visit Placer County Licensing.

Sacramento County (Antelope, Citrus Heights, Unincorporated Areas)

Sacramento County issues dog and cat licenses for most areas of Sacramento County (except City of Sacramento).  Cost is $30.00 per year ($10.00 per year for spayed and neutered animals).  Licenses can often be handled by your veternarian for you.  Animals must be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age and licensed by five months.  New residents or newly acquired pets must be licensed within 30 days or are subject to a $15.00 penalty.  Licences are renewable annually on the anniversary of first licensing.  More information can be found at Sacramento County Licensing

Sacramento (City Limits)

Sacramento issues dog and cat licenses for resident animals.  Cat licenses are voluntary but recommended.  Dog license fee is $20.00 for one year or $50.00 for three years.  A 50% discount applies if the dog is spayed or neutered.  Cat license fee is $15.00 for one year or $37.50 for three years, with a 66% discount for spayed or neutered animal.  Rabies certificate required.  Call (916) 264-7387 or visit Sacramento City Licensing for more information.

Did You Know?

$1.00 of each Roseville dog license fee goes to support the Marco Dog Park?

By licensing your dog you are far more likely to get your dog back if he should get lost?

Animals without current rabies vaccinations and licenses are routinely destroyed if they come in contact with a rabid animal?
